Germany History in Thirty War Years
Lutzen 1632: Climax of the Thirty Years War Initially a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Germany, the Thirty Years War raged across Europe between 1618 and 1648, devastating huge areas of Germany in particular. By 1632 the Protestant powers were in dire straits, until King Gustavus Adolphus II of Sweden came to their rescue.
The Thirty Years War Europe in 1618 was divided between Protestants and Catholics, and Bourbon and Hapsburg - as well as empires, kingdoms, and countless independent states. After angry Protestants tossed three representatives of the Holy Roman Empire out the window of the royal castle in Prague, world war spread from Bohemia with similar abandon and relentless persistence, destroying European powers from Spain to Sweden as they marched on the contested soil of Germany. Fanatics, speculators, and ordinary people found themselves trapped in a nightmarish world of famine, disease, and seemingly unstoppable destruction. The Thirty Years War was a turning point in the making of modern Europe and the modern world: out of it came the system of nation-states that remains fundamental to international law. C. V. Wedgewood's magisterial book is the only comprehensive account of the war in English, as well as a triumph of scholarship and literature. Includes maps and charts.
History of Germany since 1945 - After the beginning of the Cold War, following Germany's defeat in World War II, Germany was split for about 40 years, representing the focus of the two global blocks in the east and west. Thirty Years' War - The Thirty Years' War was a conflict fought between the years 1618 and 1648, principally on the territory of today's Germany, but also involving most of the major continental powers. The story describes the effect of transporting the small town of Grantville, West Virginia from the United States in the year 2000 to central Germany in the year 1632, the middle of the Thirty Years' War. Three Hundred and Thirty Five Years' War - The Three Hundred and Thirty Five Years' War is the peaceful war between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly (located off the southwest coast of the United Kingdom). It lasted 335 years without a single shot being fired; which would have made it the longest war ever and with the fewest casualties.
